(no subject)

so i was thinking of purchasing a digital camera tomorrow but i know very little about them. would very much appreciate any advice - say an omg whatever you do, do not buy this one or maybe this is what i have and it's not bad, serves its purpose or i'd highly recommend one of these!

i'm not looking for anything too extravagant, i'm no professional. i'd just like the ease of pointing, shooting, and then posting. ;)

anyone, anyone, bueller?

eta: you guys rock, thank you! *dons researcher cap*

i LOVE mine (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001G6U8O/104-3213663-7055112?v=glance). it's really tiny, lightweight, and does all kinds of fun things - nice zoom, can shoot movies, shoot in sienna and b&w, etc - but not too fancy to be completely mind-boggling. and it's not too expensive at all.

My only advice would be, go as high as you can afford with the megapixels, because more megapixels = better quality photos, and get one with rechargeable batteries lest you go broke replacing batteries all the time. I've been really happy with my Sony DSC-V1 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Sony/sony_dscv1.asp), but I think that's a bit more camera than you're looking for. A really good site for doing comparison shopping is dpreview.com (http://dpreview.com/).

This is mine (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001G6U9I/ref=pd_ts_p_16/104-7126991-4813543?v=glance&s=photo&n=281052), and I really wish I had something with higher megapixels. This one does a fine job in good lighting, and it takes decent video, but in poor lighting or with the flash off it's not that great. The zoom is pretty lame, too. I bought it because it was all I could afford at the time. :p It's a good brand and a tough, durable camera, but get one with higher pixels!

I have Kodak with terrible software because my father is brainwashed, but I'd generally go in wanting high megapixels, an array of ways to shoot, a zoom, and yeah, rechargeable batteries with a plug-in bettery charger (we bought our separate), and then just go in there, grab a sales rep who knows what he's doing, and tell him what you want. make him show you a few that fit what you're looking for, and then pick the one you like the best, or the one that's the cheapest with the fewest concessions.

Good luck, babe! They're amazingly fun, and if what you want is a bit out of your price range, just think about how much money you're saving on film and developing costs.

As for memory cards, usually online places will have deals now and again, so you just keep checking and wait for one. If you get a 1GB card (mine was $80), you'll never need anything else, but most cameras come with a 256MB, which is certainly decent to start with.

I've heard that the two main things to look for are megapixel count and optical zoom. Go as high as you can afford to on both.

I followed that advice and I've been v. happy with my Canon Coolpix. (Although the name...*facepalm*)

Another thing to check on! If you want one with video capability, make sure it can take video with audio. A lot of people's can't.

Get a Canon! They handle light much better, and their flashes are better! Sonys suck!

I have a canon powershot sd300 with 4.0 megapixels and I love it! It's small and light weight and fits in my purse or my pocket. You can get higher megapixels, but I've been really happy with 4.0: enough for good clean photos, but didn't break my bank account. It seems fairly adaptable between light, dark, still, action shots.

I found that some digital cameras have a little delay between pictures which will slow you down if you're taking action shots or it takes a few seconds for the flash to recharge. So, I just picked up several different cameras and fired off several shots to see how fast they were.

Good luck with the search. They're a lot of fun!!

so i was all set to go with the sd300 until i stumbled upon several customer warnings about the camera's LCD screen and how fragile it is, having broken or cracked for no apparent reason. how has yours help up? eep eep!

So far it's been great (and I haven't been all that nice to it either). It hasn't really spent much time in the camera case. It's been knocking around in my purse or pocket most of the time and I haven't had any problem. Of course, I've only had it a few months so who knows.

I know I decided against one of the Sony cameras because it had a very large lcd screen and the clerk warned against getting it scratched, etc.

Tricky also has a canon powershot a70 which is about 3 or so years old. Her screen has held up pretty well, a few scratches but no serious cracks or problems.

All I can say is that so far, I couldn't be happier than I am with my camera.

hmm, that's good to know! i heard some horror stories that had me running for the hills, but i think i'll keep it as an option for now. thank you so much for all the great info! <3!

You're welcome! Whatever camera you end up with, you're gonna have a lot of fun with. Good luck!
