last night i went to see Super Size Me. everyone should see this movie! essentially, the filmmaker, Morgan Spurlock, decides to do an experiment by only eating McDonalds for an entire month and he documents his body's reaction. the rules are that he has to eat three meals a day, he has to try everything on their menu at least once, and if they ask him if he wants to super size it, he must say yes. in addition to documenting his own quest, he also takes a look at the fast food climate that we're living in and what that means for us and the generations to come. in short, why are americans so fat. the statistics will floor you.

it was a truly fascinating, educational, humorous, highly entertaining and horrifying movie. GO SEE IT, NOW!!!

i would also highly recommend the book Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. again, very informative, entertaining, and shocking. the book concentrates more on the business side of the fast food industry whereas the movie focuses more on the health (or complete lack of) aspects.

i have only eaten at a mcdonalds once in the past three years and that's because there truly were no other options (other than burger king, taco bell, or kfc - and if those are my choices, mcd's fries win out. but if i were still eating meat, then i'd go with the bk's whopper w/cheese or kfc's chicken strips w/their honey-mustard sauce, yum!). i do love the taste of fast food (deep fried grease, delish!) and there are things that i miss, but overall i know it is evil (the food and the business) so it's fairly easy to stay away. and luckily i live in a city where there are plenty of other options.

i've been a vegetarian for the last three years as well and feel much better for it (although, i do eat fish, so what's that, an aquatarian?). ignorance truly is bliss. the moment i read a few articles and books on the meat industry i was done. done. i won't relate any of the disturbing details here, but it's foul. do i miss meat? hell yes, some of it - bacon tastes good. but do i really want to put that into my body? um, no thank you. i'm not militant about it, i don't try to convert people to my ways or come down on them for eating a burger in front of me. people have the right to make their own choices. i'm often tempted to give in, just one bite, but so far i haven't. veggie!meats are my friend!

i forgot to mention the second best thing that happened at the movies last night. i saw a trailer for Before Sunset! this is the sequel to one of my favorite movies, Before Sunrise, starring ethan hawke and julie delpy. they re-connect nine years later in paris and spend the day together. *sigh* i love julie delpy and while ethan can be hit or miss, i think he was perfect in this role. they had such great on-screen chemistry. their relationship felt very real and their dialogue flowed naturally. and while the wonderful words are a credit to the talented richard linklater, the authentic delivery of them is all ethan and julie.

oh, i cannot wait! \o/

i also felt all squishy inside watching the trailer considering that my crush to end all crushes recently resurfaced after eight years and i have yet to do anything about it. not to compare my real fictional relationship to their fictional real relationship, but... yeah. weird.
