koncupiscence: (bhd baby!orli by: mememememe!)
tonight i stopped in virgin (just for second, okay?) and ended up spending way too much money that i don't have, but whatever. sometimes you just gotta say, fuck it, yeah?

when i got home i promptly showed off my bag o' goodies to the roommate:

Black Hawk Down
Once Upon a Time in Mexico
Return of the King (omg, finally!)
Chasing Amy

roomie and i have had long running debates about what constitutes a "guy movie" (ie a movie marketed toward and watched predominantly by men). she maintains that most of our favorite films (by that i mean those we watch over and OVER again) are essentially "guy movies": wet hot american summer, dazed and confused, super troopers, fight club, lord of the rings, jackass, and anything askewniverse. whereas i don't particularly assign a gender to these films. never do i watch super troopers and think i'm watching a dude's movie. it's just a fucking hysterical movie. certainly it's no "chick flick", but it's an undeniably funny film, regardless of your gender (imo). but i do see her point to some degree in that, with the exception of wet hot american summer, none of these films has a strong female lead. they're all about guys, and their relationships with other guys. and with the exception of lotr, fight club, and jackass, these male relationships are not sexual in nature (ie we don't watch them for the slashy goodness). so, to some degree i guess they're "guy movies", but why would women not enjoy these movies just as much as men?

i say it's not about the gender of my cast, but well written dialogue and humor. they had me at *belly laugh*. or they made me care (as is the case with lotr, which is not so much with the funny). and i enjoy a good romantic "chick flick" comedy as much as the next person, if they're well made and well written, but those are a rare find. i had such hopes for kate hudson after almost famous, but she followed it up with such drivel as how to lose a guy in 10 days and raising helen. buh? let me guess, she ends up with the hunk du jour at the end. snooze. but it's not just about predictability, it's about crappy writing, boring, uninspired, two dimensional characters, and the audience not giving two shits what happens to them. ah, but i digress...

so. as i proudly show off my loot to roomie *points to list above*, it occurs to me.

me: dude, these are total guy movies. you might be right. *runs through list* war and guns. more guns. battles liek whoa. and comic geeks with a lesbian.
roomie: mmmHM.
me:*ponders* but see. that's not actually why i bought them. i hate war and guns. battle scenes make me cry. i don't like seeing people getting blown to bits and i'm not a fan of blood and gore. i look at these movies and see: *runs through list yet again* cute boys, cute boys, cute boys liek whoa, and cute comic geeks with a hot lesbian. fun for all! =)

so my point? i... don't think i had one. but i'ma be over here watching dvds w/cute boys and commentaries all weekend long, yay! \o/
