what could be a better way to kickoff Birthday Month than rufus. i ask you. or rather i didn't, because there was no question mark, but you get my point. being RUFUS.

HE PLAYED GO OR GO AHEAD \o/

the first time i saw him live, i waited and waited and waited, but no 'go or go ahead' was heard. the second time i saw him i hoped, but was prepared, and thus left disappointed but able to deal with the severe lack of 'go or go ahead'. but last night? \o/ most beautiful. and thanks to modern technology, i was able to share it with someone who understands. ♥

the show was very different from the summer concert in the park where it was simply rufus, piano or guitar, and the occasional back-up singer. this time for most songs he was accompanied by an entire band - horns (borrowed from the conan o'brien show :p), drums, guitars, bass, violin, etc, and two female vocals. it made the whole show far more theatrical and fun, much more of an event! but at the same time, it was classic rufus with his chatty self in between songs. and sadly last night, he was having issues with his voice and was having difficulty reaching the high notes. in fact, by the end of the evening, he was having trouble with the low notes as well. but what a trooper! he sang for a good two hours - a welcome change from the 45 minute summer show. he apologized for the funkiness of his voice, saying how he was used to always sounding 'perfect' and how weird this was for him. ;) i wish i remembered more of his chatty bits. i know he had me giggling several times.

the band okgo opened for him. they seemed decent. i don't really know their stuff, so it all sounded the same to me - but that's usually true for any band that you're not familiar with. i must say, they *were* quite fashionably dressed. and they topped off their performance with a choreographed dance number - instruments put aside, recent single playing from their cd. it was HI-STERICAL. and even better? at the end of rufus' set, he and his band-mates also did a similar dance number, sans instruments, while the music track played overhead. BEST BEST BEST.

there was also this moment where rufus came out dressed in a bright blue gown, wearing a tiara and other sparkly accoutrement, and was fastened to a cross, upon which he segued into 'gay messiah' (if you didn't see that one coming). :D oh, rufus. after this number he spent the rest of his encore singing in a bathrobe and socks. <333 if only i had a better cameraphone. *sigh* (i didn't even bother attempting photos of the above because there was a heavy spotlight on him through most of it, which would result in pictures resembling the center of the sun.)

nonetheless, i bring you the best of my glowblobs from the night:

he played just about everything from want two, a bit from the other albums, a christmas song that should be appearing on his mothers upcoming record, a leonard cohen song, and something new he's kicking around. if anyone's interested in specifics, i know there were more, but these were definitely sung:

hallelujah
poses
oh what a world
go or go ahead
vibrate
14th street
natasha
beautiful child
dinner at eight
the one you love
little sister
the art teacher
peach trees
this love affair
gay messiah
memphis skyline
old whore's diet

love love love.
