last night i went to see 'pippin' at the mark taper theatre. it was another Deaf West production so the entire cast signed as well as sang. i saw them do 'big river,' the story of huck finn, a few years back in nyc which i really, really enjoyed. i'm not quite sure what to make of pippin. i certainly was entertained, for the most part, and i loved the signing aspect and a lot of the little humorous bits and bobs, but... the ending. it left me... idk, it left me.
i'd never seen pippin before, so i'm not sure how much was altered from the original to incorporate the deaf actors, but i'm fairly certain that only one actor usually plays pippin, whereas in last night's production, there were two: the main pippin, played by a deaf actor, and his 'double' played and sung by a hearing actor (who was BY FAR the best part of the ENTIRE production OM NOM MICHAEL ARDEN WHO ARE YOU AND I NEED YOU IN MY PANTS AND LIIIIFE). and it worked, it totally worked having two of them! but...
the thing is... they had such good chemistry, as well they should being essentially two halves of the same person, but... and i really don't think i was alone in this, as the musical went on, i kept expecting them to kiss. but how narcissistic would that have been, loll. but i know it wasn't just in my head... they way they gazed at each other, the way certain scenes played out, there was definite jealousy and love mixed in there. i ended up wanting their story, i didn't care so much about the other cast members and so when it ended, like it did, i was just... huh. :||||
idk, possible self-lovin' gay romance aside, i just wasn't that thrilled with the choices pippin made at the end. maybe a different production would have made me feel differently? would have sold me on the idea? or maybe that was the whole point... idk.
i'd still recommend it. the performances were pretty stellar, esp the two leads and the magician. and srsly MICHAEL ARDEN. I WANT TO FIND YOU A BOY TO LOVE AND KEEP YOU BOTH AS MY OWN.
ion, WATCHMEN TODAY YAY HOORAH WAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. \o/ and then sleeping in tiems tomorrow, followed by lazy coffee and interwebby catch up. ugh, i need it so hard.

Date: 2009-03-07 06:12 pm (UTC)this production had the added horror of him being torn away, rather emotionally, from his 'other half' - and i'm still not quite sure what their intention was with that, but it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. a confused and rotten taste. SHRUUUUUUUUUG.

Date: 2009-03-07 06:23 pm (UTC)i had just spent two hours watching the two pippins frolic, sing, and dance across that stage together (not to mention gaze lovingly at each other), and then at the end they're torn apart (rather dramatically) and the main pippin chooses to stay with catherine and her son - a life that he never seemed to enjoy all that much. i don't think it was their intention to scream STANDARD HETERO LIFE = THE RIGHT CHOICE over all others, but... idk. i couldn't help but scowl and say WTF WAS THAT SHIT. >:||||
oh well. the rest of it was SUPER. :D
