attn e-reader types!

i've been thinking lately of getting a kindle, nook, or whathaveyou for the primary purpose of reading fic in bed. my laptop is rather unwieldy, and i hate to kill a bunch of trees for my brief enjoyment (i mean, i have and will for fics that are keepers, but you don't know that going in for the first time, do you).

any suggestions? is one or another best for fic purposes (downloading/uploading/transferring files yadda yadda)? i haven't a clue, i am quite possible the least technically savvy person you know, so any thoughts on the subject would be most welcome.

I can't make a comparison, since all I've ever tried is my Kindle, but dear Lord I love my Kindle. I wouldn't be able to read in bed without it. I've put several keeper fics on it - I think there are comms where they format fics for Kindle. (Plus I have the software to do it myself, which is cool.)

I love my Nook Color. It can handle epubs and pdfs, and it's easy to buy books from b&n, or to download from google books or project gutenberg to the pc, then load onto the Nook.

yay e-readers for casual reading!

also? yay for real books! :)

I love my Kindle Fire! Especially because comics. It IS a little heavier than you expect it to be, but not terrible. I have a couple of apps on it that I can tell you about that make everything super easy, so you can just download from AO3 directly to your Kindle and also transfer comics without having to futz around with converting them from cbr/cbz to PDF or anything.

There's also a program, Calibre, that works for basically all the e-readers that will convert things to the proper format and help you organize the shit out of everything.

I love our Color nook, but I have to say, my Toshiba Tablet is amazing. I use the Nook and Kindle apps on it to buy my ebooks and can use other apps for my comic books and manga. And then I have all the other functionality of a computer. Web browsing, email, etc.

I heart my Nook Color a lot. I've compared it to my friend's Kindle Fire and they are VERY similar. (In my heart of hearts I want an iPad, but...not till they go down in price O__o)

I have only ever tried a Kindle, but I love mine! I have over 500 fics on there (I know, right??) and only a couple of actual BOOKS. But I have saved so many trees, Krit! I used to print out everything to read it in bed, so not only am I saving trees, but toner, as well. \o/

I'd have to say that the only real downside I've discovered is that it is really difficult to organize fics on the Kindle. I haven't tried doing it through separate software on the computer yet, though, so that's definitely something that I need to do.

i have a kindle keyboard and i love it to death. reading the kindle screen is much easier on my eyes compared to a computer screen and i can change the size of font according to how tired my eyes are, hahah!

reading fic is a breeze - all you have to do is copy and paste everything in a word document and e-mail it to amazon, which converts it into a kindle doc and e-mails it directly to your kindle if you have wifi. if not, you can upload it easily from your computer as well. you can also e-mail pdfs to amazon and they will convert it for you as well.

if your fic has fanart, the kindle will resize the pic to fit your screen. the pic shows up in black and white, which i guess is better than nothing.

i find a lot of books, even paperbacks, come in unwieldy sizes these days, so the kindle is smaller and lighter and therefore easier to tote around.
